Test the offer in the Finnish market
Describe who will pay, what problem you solve and why the customer would choose you. Speak with potential customers, compare existing alternatives and record what is confirmed versus what is still an assumption. Finland is one market, but a local service in Helsinki, an industrial project in Pirkanmaa and an online service for international clients have very different sales and delivery conditions.
Decide which language you need for customer communication and documents. English can support international work, while Finnish or Swedish may be relevant for specific customers, sectors and public interactions.
Starting a company in Finland: prepare the launch
Set out the offer, first sales channel, initial costs and responsibilities in a short working plan. Separate one-time purchases from recurring costs and the cost of each delivery. For a service, include travel, tools and availability. For production, include premises, equipment, suppliers and the route to the first orders.
- Define the customer and offer. State the result the customer receives.
- Check demand. Collect specific reactions instead of relying on a general belief that the idea should work.
- Map the work. Identify people, suppliers, equipment and premises.
- Review obligations. Check sector-specific permits, taxation and work or residence conditions before making commitments.
The cost of starting a business in Finland: build your launch budget
There is no universal launch price. The cost of starting a business in Finland depends on the legal form, activity and any permits required. A registration fee is only one part of the budget. Separate three categories:
- One-off costs: filing fees, permits where required, equipment, preparing premises and setting up the tools needed to operate.
- Recurring costs: rent, accounting, software, insurance and delivery costs. Check taxes, prepayments and employer obligations for your legal form and actual activity.
- Working capital: money for purchases and ongoing commitments before customers pay. Allow for slower initial sales and invoice payment terms.
Get current supplier quotations and make a payment calendar: what is due before launch, what repeats each month and what reserve you would need if revenue is lower. PRH allows an Oy to be formed without share capital, but that does not mean a business has no start-up costs.
For a practical discussion of your budget preparation, explore paid Torgex consultations. Agree the scope, fee and service language before work starts; a consultation does not guarantee profitability or funding.

Choose a company structure and register it
The suitable structure depends on ownership, responsibility, management and the way income will be generated. Do not choose only because a form appears easy to register. The Finnish Patent and Registration Office and the YTJ service provide the official route for company registration and tax registration details. Check the current instructions for the structure you intend to use.
A business bank account is one practical part of setup. Prepare information about the company, owners, representatives and planned activity, then ask the selected bank for its current application requirements. Company registration does not itself guarantee account approval.
Keep ownership separate from work and residence rights
Owning or registering a company does not automatically give a person the right to live or work in Finland. Immigration rules distinguish different grounds for entrepreneurship, start-up activity and other residence permits. Check the Finnish Immigration Service guidance for your nationality, current status and role in the company before relying on the business as part of a move.
This distinction also matters for a founder who lives abroad: company planning, tax questions and personal permission to work are connected in practice, but they are separate questions that may require different specialists.
Plan the first customers and operating rhythm
Registration is only one milestone. Prepare a simple way to receive enquiries, quote work, confirm delivery, issue documents and follow payments. Decide who approves work and what happens if a customer changes the scope. Keep confidential customer information and contracts in a controlled place rather than publishing them in an open business profile.
If the plan requires a production site, renovation or an extension, include the premises and construction route early. If you are comparing a new launch with an existing company, read the guide to buying or selling a business in Finland.
Preparing your first business discussion with Torgex
Some founders need help turning a broad idea into a list of decisions: company setup, customer model, business problems, financing questions or a project involving several parties. You can review the paid consultation options offered by Torgex. It is a business consultation service, not a bank, law firm or accounting firm, and it does not guarantee registration, financing or a particular outcome.
Use official sources for current requirements and ask a qualified professional to review legal, tax or immigration questions that depend on your circumstances.
